Historical Study & Research

Historical research involves work in libraries, archives, special collections, or other repositories. Information about people or places in the past are found in documents, manuscripts, books, databases, maps, images, and other materials.

The School of History at St Andrews is currently ranked #1 in the UK, and is particularly known for its outstanding Department of Medieval History.

Monastic History...

...from the desert of Egypt to the banks of the River Tay.  Our integrated lectures and discussions take you from the earliest origins of the monastic tradition to the dissolution of Lindores Abbey in the upheaval of the Protestant Reformation in Sixteenth-Century Scotland.  Our "from the beginning" approach ensures that all students have the background needed to make the most of our excavations at Lindores Abbey -- a community founded by a group of monks from Tiron Abbey in France in the twelfth century.

...in Classroom and Archive

Experience student life at St Andrews in lectures and discussions at the Department of Medieval History. Sessions are also held at Special Collections in the historic Martyrs Kirk reading room.
