The wadi known as the Batn al-Baqara ("belly of the cow") is located approximately 2.5 km from Middle Kingdom necropolis, near the modern town of Bani Hasan el-Shorouk.  This wadi presents a very complex cultural landscape with rock-cut temples and tombs that have never been comprehensively documented and studied. A number of the monuments appear to have been inhabited by Christian monks in late antiquity and since 2014, the team has been engaged in recording the material traces of their activity.  Click on the buttons in the satellite map below to learn more about work in specific parts of the Batn al-Baqara.
